How to Stay Motivated

 December 2007  Staying Motivated

Staying or getting motivated to stick with an exercise program is especially difficult now that the Holidays are approaching. But it is even more important at this stressful time to stick with it.

Here are a few tips to keep you going or get you started.

Shift your focus from the outcome to the process - Instead of setting long term goals that focus on weight loss etc. set goals that relate to participation, such as (i.e., how many times you will work out this month or what type of exercise you will do.)

Do have a clear goal for each workout session - Don't be vague, or you may focus on the negative experiences. You could set a goal for speed, or endurance, graceful movements or focus on breathing.

Listen to your favorite music during your workouts. This works for me every time. Whether it be upbeat or something beautiful., as long as it helps to get you moving and keeps you focused on the task.

Try something new -
Dancing is a great form of exercise that also is fun and challenging. Belly dancing, Latin dance, Any kind of dancing as long as you love the music and it's fun.

If you are just starting up after a layoff or have never started an exercise program than take baby steps at first. Think of it as a life style change and slowly acclimate yourself to it.
